SAN ANDREAS - Calaveras County will receive $46,000 from the Sierra
Nevada Conservancy to pay the cost of developing a plan to preserve
open space and wildlife habitat.

Calaveras County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to accept the
money. The plans for protecting habitat and open space would be
integrated into the county's General Plan, which is now in the midst
of a years-long update.

The current General Plan's open space element fails to actually
designate which parts of the county should be preserved and does not
set lot-size standards adequate to protect open space, according to a
2006 review of the plan by Mintier & Associates, a consulting firm.

Open space is a contentious issue in the county, with conservation
groups regularly clashing at public meetings with property owners who
fear that open-space measures would undermine their ability to
subdivide and develop property.
