The Rotary Club of Jackson, California as Sponsor Club will conduct a Pilot Project “Training the Trainers in Integrated Cooking Method”, with the Rotary Club 5 de Dezembro of Brasília, Brazil as Host Club and in partnership with the college “União Pioneira de Integração Social (UPIS Faculdades Integradas)” and the “Fraternidade Feminina Cruzeiro do Sul.”
They will conduct the project of Integrated Cooking Method to be held in Brazil’s Distrito Federal which will start with Hands-on-Workshops in four different locations around Brasilia, teaching the participants of needy communities the use and manufacturing of the following solar and integrated cooking devices:
• The Solar Cooker is a foldable panel of cardboard covered with aluminum foil that works as a reflector and needs full sunlight;
• The Rocket Stove is a low cost, highly fuel efficient stove made of 5 gallon cans or bricks and mud. The Rocket Stove does not generate the smoke of traditional wood fires and can be used at night or on rainy days;
• The Hay Basket (or Hay Box) is a fireless heat retainer made of a box or basket stuffed with insulating material that finishes cooking the food partially cooked on the Rocket Stove or keeps the food cooked in the Solar Cooker
warm, after the sun goes down.
• The WAPI, or WAter Pasteurization Indicator, is a cheap and easy to use device which indicates when water is safe for drinking.
The instructors of the Sponsor Club will be in charge of the workshops (in the Portuguese language) and the teaching of manufacturing the cooking devices, as well as the use of the Wapi for water pasteurization and will provide
handouts and teacher’s manuals in Portuguese.
The Host Club will select leaders of needy communities most apt to become monitors of the Integrated Cooking method as well as provide the venues, food for the workshops and lodging and transportation for the teaching team.
The Pilot Project will be completed within a period of 2 years after which the trainees will become Master Trainers, qualified to carry on further programs and train other teachers, expanding the Integrated Cooking Method and assist
the women in making the transition from traditional to solar cooking.
