Edith was born on January 7, 1884, in Sheep Ranch, Calaveras County, California to Thomas and Mary Irene Hill Irvine. Her father and grandfather were both miners at Carson Hill, Calaveras County, in 1880, and her father was likely working at the famed Sheep Ranch Mine when she was born.

Edith's brother Robert, two years older, was her close companion from early childhood (another brother Clinton died in infancy in 1888).

Edith graduated from the Mokelumne Hill Grammar School in 1897, and reportedly later graduated from high school in Berkeley.

The year 1900 found the Irvine family living between Mokelumne Hill and Jackson, with Thomas mining. In the 1910 Census Edith’s father is identified as the deputy post master of Mokelumne Hill, Robert as a miner, and Edith as a photographer.

Edith is described in these early years as being red-haired, adventurous, and opinionated.
