There are many indications that Edith became interested in photography at a young age, likely encouraged by her schoolmate and friend Frank Peek.

Frank was several years her senior and as a young man operated a photo studio in town. His sister, Jeanette, was one of Edith’s friends and appears in many of her photographs.

The Irvines lived for many years in a fine home at the edge of town, built in 1852 of local cut stone. She convinced her parents to allow her to have a lean-to darkroom constructed on the back of the house.

Edith practiced her photographic techniques by taking numerous pictures of what was readily available: the family house, horses, and cat.
