12. Events

Calendar Events. Stand-alone content (think of one page, per event entry) that magically create links in the calendar to the event information. Neat! The four closest upcoming events also appear on the home page in a list. They automatically drop off when they are over.

Just go to Create Content / Event. Use a brief title (which will appear on the calendar as a link to the full content), then include as much information as possible in the body text field! So what you may see on the calendar for a given date would be "Bug's Birthday," but when you click that, you are taken to the page about my son's birthday party, with more information that you probably wanted. :)

Comments are allowed by default, unless you disable them.

The event calendar is going to be an important way for all of us to keep up to date. Use it often!

Events are public by default, but you can post events that are only visible to your specific group, if you'd like - just click the "Audience" box for the appropriate groups and the event becomes non-public, only visible to that group. Similarly, you can keep an event public but also click the box for your desired group(s), and the notice will appear on the calendar for everyone, but also on the group's home page as a short blurb.

Public events appear on the calendar that everyone sees when they visit the site, while private group events will only show on the calendar for group members who are logged in. People not registered to that group won't see them. ALL events post to the same calendar, however (cool, huh?) :)

Events with Volunteer Timeslots. This is nifty - they work pretty much the same as standard events, (you can make them viewable by public or by groups, they appear in the calendar, etc). The thing that makes this content type really cool is that you can set timeslots and call for volunteers. When your volunteers go to that event page, they can sign up to work certain timeslots, etc. Really great tool for groups, try it out!!
