Ivy Andrew Dahl, a lifelong resident of Mokelumne Hill, was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WW II and the Korean War as well as a former Postmaster of Mokelumne Hill, passed away on November 22, 2009. Viewing will be on Friday, Dec. 4, from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5 from 8:30-11:30 am at San Andreas Memorial Chapel in San Andreas. Graveside services will be on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Mokelumne Hill Catholic Cemetery, Mokelumne Hill. Informal gathering of friends and relatives to follow at the Hotel Leger.
Ivy was a life long resident of Mokelumne Hill and born as the only child of Flora and Andrew Dahl on March 28th, 1921.
He graduated from Calaveras High School in 1939 and attended Stockton Junior College for three years where he studied Zoology.
Ivy joined the U.S. Air Force, 7th Squadron in World War II and was stationed at Canton Island for three years until the end of the war. He re-enlisted March 5, 1951, at Headquarters Squadron Section, 5th Air Base Group, Travis AFB, Travis, California, and served until April 4th, 1955, where he received a National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He served in the Korean War as a postal technician and senior dispatch clerk.
He was Postmaster in Mokelumne Hill from 1946 until re-enlistment in 1951. He returned in 1955 to serve as Postmaster until his retirement in 1976.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Gladys Dahl, who passed away in 1996.
He enjoyed fishing in local streams and lakes, woodcutting, cooking, gardening, gold panning, and camping.
He is survived by his only son, Bill, daughter-in-law, Teresa, two grandchildren, Stephanie and Matthew, and many, many extended family and friends.
